. and the republicans, boehner's got to go to work and come back, and now there's 70 of them left, the tea party guys. these are guys who went to congress not to limit government but to stop it. so what are you going to do? we've got five democrats, five republicans who range from dick durbin of illinois, great progressive democrat, and coburn of oklahoma, a progressive conservative, and five dems, five republicans, one independent, that's a super majority. and for god's sake, the reason we were so successful is we effectively pissed off everybody in america. >> congratulations, sir. kudos. kudos to you. >> good morning. it's thursday, december 6th. welcome to "morning joe." with us on set, msnbc political analyst, former democratic congressman, harold ford jr. >> mr. professor. >> good morning. >> professor. >> and we have former treasury official and "morning joe" economic analyst, steve rattner. >> financier. >> rattner is here. i like -- and we have to go back to that. it's the truth. >> it is! >> money is money. >> in washington, msnbc and "time" senior political analyst, mark halperin. >> we sa

. interesting. president obama and speaker boehner. nobody else. with 24 days before a year-end deadline, "the new york times" says boehner made the request to clear the negotiation room going forward, leaving it up to himself and the president to reach a deal to avoid automatic tax hikes and deep spending cuts. and while the two men may be negotiating privately, yesterday the president took his message to the public, visiting a local virginia family as a part of his my2k social media campaign, sitting around the kitchen table. he told the family he was optimistic. >> the message that i think we all want to send to members of congress is, this is a solvable problem. the senate has already passed a bill that would make sure the middle-class taxes don't go up next year by a single dime. just to be clear, i'm not going to sign any package that somehow prevents the top rate from going up for folks at the top 2%. but i do remain optimistic that we can get something done that is good for families like this one and that is good for the american economy. >> what great news, i think. don't you think so

and speaker boehner met privately at the white house. their first face-to-face meeting since they agreed last week to clear everyone else out of the negotiating room. neither side revealed anything about the meeting that was part of the agreement. only saying that the lines of communication remain open. but yesterday another influential republican, senator bob corker from the senate banking committee, said his party should consider the president's position on raising tax rates on the wealthy. >> there is a growing group of folks that are looking at this and realizing that we don't have a lot of cards as it relates to the tax issue before year end. i mean, we have one house, that's it. the presidency and the senate's in the democrats' hands. a lot of people are putting forth a theory, and i actually think it has merit where you go ahead and give the president the 2% increase that he's talking about, the rate increase on the top 2%, and all of a sudden the shift goes back to entitlements. i actually am beginning to believe that is the best route for us to take. >> that's significant, and jon, t

know, i saw that plan, that letter that boehner sent me and not going to do it even though it is the first time the republicans went on record saying they are willing to raise revenues. the president said they have to raise the rates. he looked less like monte hall and more like monte burns. itch >> gretchen: he will not hold more meetings or face to face until the republicans agree to increase the tax rates. so what was on the paper yesterday was the idea to still increase revenue without increasing the actual tax rate by getting rid of the deductions and loop holes. that is not acceptable . it au pairs a hard line stance now and the meetings are off. >> brian: they talked about a two-step process. maybe we can leave the tax rates except the horrible people that make a lot of money. leave those tax rates in place and do the hard stuff in the second half . year and of course, we have the, the debt ceiling that has to be raised in a month. if the president gets his way and forces the hand of republicans to accept something they will not forget that and he will have another b

criticizing him a week ago for running campaign events instead of sitting down and talking to john boehner. he's talking to john boehner now and we're all better off because of it. >> he's still going out and talking to the people with his message. my point is congress will deal with this fiscal mess one way or another. if they get it done, it will be a great accomplishment for everybody. we may get immigration reform since republicans seem to now want immigration reform. i'm not sure what else you can get from congress in this atmosphere. what i worry about obama in the second term is not arrogance and complacency, all that may be true. i wonder what you may get done with congress still in a state of gridlock. >> this is the biggest fear of republicans we cut a deal in the short term on fiscal cliff without any real spending reform or tax reform and won't have enough time or political will to get the real reforms that need to take place and republicans raise taxes and get no spending cuts. >> that's the biggest fear of democrats we don't deal with thi this. >> eugene, we were showing the tape

and house speaker john boehner spoke about it on the phone with one another. that discussion came as treasury secretary tim geithner confirmed mr. obama is prepared to take the economy over the cliff unless republicans agree to raise tax rates on the wealthy. >>> meantime in georgia, some activists expressed frustration about the stalemate in holiday spirit. they delivered symbolic lumps of kill to the offices of both of their state's u.s. senators. security guard met them, at chambliss' office. a few were let inside without the camera and media present. of course. that would have been the real story. >> folks are upset now. see what happens january 1 after you get the first paycheck and go, oh, this is what the fiscal cliff meant. yeah. 2013. the next story involves a new grassroots campaign that is starting. meant to draw attention to the nation's debt crisis. it is our "favorite story of the day." the campaign is called -- "the can kicks back." aimed at young people and features former republican senator allen simpson, a rather spry allen simpson at that. >> stop instagraming y

the fiscal cliff. mr. obama and house speaker john boehner took a step yesterday, speaking about the standoff on the phone. i guess at least they weren't texting, right? while the details of their chat remain private, both men continued to talk past each other in public. >> let's allow higher rates to go up for the top 2%. >> there are ways to limit deductions, close loopholes, and have the same people pay more, more of their money to the federal government, without raising tax rates, which we believe will harm our economy. >> treasury secretary tim geithner also weighed in yesterday saying the president is willing to allow the nation to go over the cliff if republicans don't agree to raise taxes on the wealthy. >>> we are learning new details about colorado's shooting suspect james holmes now that thousands of e-mails in the case have been released. messages indicate holmes may have had a brief romantic relationship in the days before the tragedy. we have learned that in early june, holmes began specifically talking and fantasizing about killing a lot of people. his psychiatrist was so worri
